The universe, it turns out, contains exactly enough information to describe itself, which would be a remarkable and elegant fact if anything were around to appreciate it that hadn't already been consumed by the effort of trying to understand it.
It has been mathematically proven that any system complex enough to understand itself is complex enough to be wrong about itself. Humans achieved this milestone sometime around the invention of the mirror and have been making the most of it ever since.
The funny sad true part — Gödel actually proved that no system can fully prove its own consistency. Adams understood that humans are exactly that kind of broken system — self-referencing, incomplete, and carrying on anyway.
